Admissions

All pupils attending Calderdale PRU are either permanently excluded from a mainstream school, or are attending Calderdale PRU as a preventative placement to improve their behaviour.

Pupils who are permanently excluded from mainstream schools are referred to the Local Authority Exclusions Officer, Darrell Carney who will advise parents and pupils on transferring to Calderdale Pupil Referral Unit.

For pupils at risk of exclusions arrangements for entry to Calderdale PRU are made through the Calderdale Secondary and Primary BACS systems or are made through individual schools.

Further information can be obtained from the admissions office at the Local Authority.

Once a place at the PRU has been agreed, parents and pupils will be invited to a meeting with either the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher, to formalise transition arrangements. A member of staff from the pupil’s previous school, and or other relevant agencies, are also asked to attend this meeting.

The aim of this meeting is to meet parents and pupils and to discuss the follow information;

  • Background information (family history, other relevant information, contact numbers)
  • Previous school information (including achievements, attendance, behaviour records, exclusions etc)
  • Attainment and progress data from the previous school
  • Parental and pupil views about the move to Calderdale PRU
  • Our Expectations in terms of conduct, attendance, punctuality, uniform etc.

Please see Home School Agreement and Parent and Carers Information pack, found in Useful Forms.

At the meeting a start date will be agreed and each pupil will then be expected to attend two preliminary sessions in school (2.30pm-4.30pm) where they will complete assessments in both English and Maths, which provides us with additional assessment information. Pupils will be informed of a full time start date and the relevant timetable will be issued.

Please note we as a Pupil Referral Unit also use a range of other assessment tools to help us assess each individual pupils needs, such as;

  • Reading tests
  • Dyslexia tests
  • BGSTEEM (self-confidence assessment)
